  • STMicroelectronics has made starting new designs with its popular 8-bit STM8 microcontrollers easier and faster by introducing the STM8CubeMX graphical configurator

    30 Mar 2017 STM8CubeMX supports the complete portfolio of mainstream, low-power, and automotive 8-bit STM8 microcontrollers. This new, free tool helps designers select the optimum 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) from the STM8 family to satisfy their application requirements. Designers can also jump-start development on STM8 boards from the ST portfolio by pre-configuring the tool in the same way the MCU is implemented on the chosen board. STM8CubeMX then provides graphical tools that help complete basic configuration of the chosen device. These include a pinout configurator with automatic conflict resolution, a clock-tree configurator with dynamic validation, and a power sequencer and consumption estimator. A configuration report generated on completion shows how the designer’s requirements have been met. The STM8CubeMX PC-based application is available for Windows®, Linux®, and macOS® platforms
  • STMicroelectronics Launches Tiny 2.6A Brushed DC Motor Driver for Portable, Battery-Powered IoT Devices

    24 Mar 2017 The STSPIN250 single-chip 2.6A driver for brushed DC motors extends STMicroelectronics’ family of miniature, low-voltage, energy-efficient drivers for battery-powered portable and wearable applications. The driver integrates a full power-MOSFET bridge and fixed off-time PWM current controller in a tiny 3mm x 3mm package that saves space in portable equipment. The low on-resistance of the power stage (200mΩ total, high-side + low-side) and the best-in-the market current-sipping standby mode -- below 80nA -- help maximize battery runtime and keep equipment-case temperatures down. Its supply-voltage range of 10V to 1.8V allows designers to specify a power source as small as a single Li-ion cell. Brushed DC motors offer a strong combination of performance, cost-effectiveness, and reliability, and are a popular choice of designers in a wide variety of applications. STSPIN250’s high output-current capability allows use in low-to-medium-power applications such as portable printers, POS terminals, consumer devices, electronic valves or door lockers, toys, and medical or wellness devices ranging from electric toothbrushes to syringe pumps. It also has comprehensive built-in protection features including Under-Voltage lockout (UVLO), non-dissipative over-current protection, short-circuit protection, and thermal shutdown. The STSPIN250 joins the three monolithic, low-voltage drivers for portable and battery-powered applications that ST introduced last year: the STSPIN220 for stepper motors, STSPIN230 for three-phase brushless motors, and STSPIN240 for brushed DC motors up to 1.3A. The STSPIN family now presents designers with a choice of compact, convenient, and energy-efficient drivers for the motor types most commonly used in portable applications, contributing to the widespread adoption of battery-powered IoT devices. A complete ecosystem is ready to support fast and easy evaluation and prototyping with the STSPIN250, and comprises an STM32 Nucleo expansion board (X-NUCLEO-IHM13A1) and related software tools (X-CUBE-SPN13) that connect motor-control projects with the extensive STM32Cube MCU-development resources.   • TIB Series DIN-Rail Power Supplies

    20 Mar 2017 This new generation of DIN-rail power supplies combines most efficient circuit topology with optimized cost/performance ratio for industrial environments and for electric control cabinets. The design is focused on the parameters and functions to provide highest reliability in a general range of applications. With a very high efficiency of up to 94.5% the units are in the vanguard of industrial DIN-rail power supplies concerning reduced power loss. It allows a very slim package design. Furthermore the case offers the potentially useful feature to fix the DIN-rail clip to the side wall for the mounting inside flat panels. The DC-OK LED indicator is visible from both sides. The high efficiency results in a low heat dissipation which enables a reliable full load operation in an environment temperature range of -25 to +60°C without forced air cooling. The units are even certified for up to 70°C with 20% output power de-rating. Over a period of minimum 4 seconds they can operate with a boost power of 150%. If boost time is exceeded the units will switch off and automatically restart after about 10 seconds. The boost power facilitates the activation of stepper motors, solenoids or actuators. For such applications the units also provide a true power back immunity and output over-voltage protection. There is no output voltage undershoot when back power stops. Also dynamic load changes have only minimal impact on the output voltage (~100 mV at 20-90% load step change) The EMC immunity is compliant for applications in industrial environments (EN 61000-6-2) while the emission complies with the standard for residential and commercial environments (EN 61000-6-3). Furthermore the outputs are radio-interference-suppressed which impedes radiation at long output lines (antennas). This filter reduces the common mode current to the limits for telecommunication ports. The units operate with a high power factor of up to 99% by active power factor correction which also keeps the input inrush current low. The TIB series models are available with a nominal power of 80, 120, 240 or 480 Watt (+50% boost power). The output voltage is adjustable from 23.5 to 28 VDC. They come with the safety standard approvals for IEC/EN 60950-1, UL 60950-1 and UL 508.

    11 Mar 2017 A new-generation Discovery kit provides access to the STM32F723’s unique high-speed USB PHY, and a new STM32 Nucleo-144 board supports the STM32F722. With rich on-board features including MEMS microphones and sensors, an audio codec, and a display for user-interface development, the STM32 Discovery kits are ready to support creative demonstrations. In addition, the Discovery board has a High-Speed USB connector to take advantage of the USB-HS (High-Speed) Device physical layer (PHY) integrated in the STM32F723IEK6 MCU, as well as USB-FS (Full-Speed) connector and a TFT 240x240-pixel LCD touchscreen.     9 Feb 2017 STMicroelectronics has extended its SLLIMM™ nano series of Intelligent Power Modules (IPMs) for motor drives with more package options that help minimize overall size and complexity, extra integrated features, and greater efficiency leveraging the latest-generation 500V MOSFETs. With a current rating of 1A or 2A, the new IPMs target applications up to 100 Watts, such as refrigerator compressors, washing-machine or dishwasher motors, draining and recirculation pumps, fans, and other drives running at less than 20kHz in hard-switching circuitries. Operation up to 150°C allows use in harsh environments.   The modules integrate a three-phase MOSFET bridge and gate-driver HVICs, with value-added features including an unassigned op-amp and comparator for functions such as over-current protection and current sensing. Additional built-in safety features include interlocking to prevent shoot-through currents from damaging MOSFETs of the bridge, a fault-status output, shutdown input, and smart-shutdown capability. An optional built-in thermistor helps simplify over-temperature protection. In addition to the zig-zag lead option, the new series is also available in a line-lead package. These give designers extra flexibility to simplify the board layout and minimize controller size in mechatronic assemblies and other space-constrained applications. The high thermal performance of the packages, combined with the superior efficiency of ST’s latest 500V MOSFETs, enhances designers’ freedom to minimize heatsink size or create heatsink-free solutions for lower-power applications. The low MOSFET on-resistance of 3.6Ω and 1.7Ω, in 2A and 1A variants, respectively, combines with low switching losses to ensure high overall energy efficiency. The MOSFETs have separate open-emitter connections to module pins, which simplifies use of three-shunt current sensing for field-oriented motor control (FOC) or single-shunt sensing for trapezoidal control. The modules also integrate the bootstrap diodes needed to control the high-side MOSFET gates, further minimizing demand for external components. The STIPN1M50T-H, STIPN1M50-H, STIPN2M50T-H (L), and STIPN2M50-H are in production now.
